The Harmful Effects of Ant Infestation and How to be Dengue Ready

I for one take ants for granted. Little do I know that an ant infestation can cause major problems for our health and home? There are hundreds of ant species in the Philippines but households usually get invaded by three types of ants, in general: the black garden ant, the brown Pharaoh ant, and the tropical fire ant.

My first reaction was, REALLY? I only know that their bite stings so much and tends to itch a lot but other than that I thought they are harmless creatures.

Some of the threats according to Jardine Distribution Inc are:

Bites, stings, and venom.  Ant bites are not only painful but can cause swelling or even rashes. There are ants, like the tropical fire ant, that sting and inject venom. These are more dangerous; people who are allergic to ant venom may need emergency treatment. Depending on its severity, an allergic reaction to ant venom can be fatal.

Contamination and diseases. Here’s another reason we should not take an ant infestation for granted: ants can carry harmful bacteria that cause serious diseases. Some ants eat decomposing plants and animals. When the ants go from their feeding area into your house, they are potentially carrying harmful germs. Pharaoh ants are known carriers of the salmonella bacteria, which causes potentially fatal infections.

Structural, plant, and crop damage. Ants may choose to nest in portions of our house. They cause damage when they burrow tunnels through our home’s wooden structures. They can even weaken brick and cement if the nest becomes large enough.

Jardine Distribution Inc jas a convenient and effective way to get rid of ants inside and outside your home. Their product, Optigard Ant Bait contains thiamethoxam, a powerful ingredient that both attracts and kills ants at the same time, thus, eliminating ant infestation for up to 3 months.

Optigard Ant Bait has dual action - first, it attracts ants so they take the bait. Second, the ants exposed to the bait bring it back to their nests. This will expose more ants in the nest to the bait’s killing action, including the colony’s queen.

Using Optigard Ant Bait is very convenient. It comes in a colorless gel form, so there’s no worry about staining or dripping. The gel is contained in a syringe applicator. All that we have to do is push the syringe to apply the gel to target areas in our home. It’s best to apply Optigard Ant Bait in areas where we observe ants frequently passing through.

Then what about those Dengue causing insects that is all around the place?

Dengue is a serious, sometimes fatal disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. The dengue virus destroys our red blood cells and may cause high fever, rashes, headaches, and joint pains, and even internal hemorrhage. If it’s a severe case, dengue may even kill the patient. So let’s not take dengue for granted especially this coming rainy season.

The rise in dengue cases during the rainy season is caused mainly by the increase in dengue mosquito breeding sites. The two species of mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus to humans, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, breed in stagnant water that forms when it rains. This stagnant water may form in uncovered plastic containers, drums. old tires, and clogged canals.

Defend Our Homes from these Denque

Eliminate breeding sites.  There are possible breeding sites for dengue mosquitoes inside your home or in the immediate environment.  Get rid of any stagnant water in flower vases. Make sure that your water containers—drums, pails, etc.—are covered. Dispose of junk that may contain stagnant water, like old tires, and discarded plastic containers, for example.  Check around your house for stagnant water in potholes or clogged canals. Get help in de-clogging the canals and removing the water from potholes.

General cleaning.  Mosquitoes are attracted to the junk that may have accumulated in your garage or bodega, or any spare space in the house. Old newspapers, old toys, old shoes---all the things no longer used but allowed to stay in the house.  These serve as hiding places for dengue-mosquitoes so better get rid of them.

Screens. Putting screens over windows and doors will prevent dengue mosquitoes from entering the house.

Use an effective mosquito killer like ZAP AK (All-Knockdown) Mosquito Killer in your house to eliminate any dengue mosquitoes that have entered it.
